Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed in a letter to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Monday that Meta was influenced by the Biden administration in 2021 to censor content related to COVID-19, including humor and satire.

“In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, such as the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams for Political Family Moments months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree, ” Zuckerberg said.

In his communication to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg described that the influence he felt in the year 2021 was “wrong” and he regrets that his company, the parent of Facebook & Instagram, was not more vocal. Zuckerberg further stated Cyberbullying that with the “hindsight and new information,” some decisions made in 2021 that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“As I mentioned to our teams at the time, I strongly believe that we should not lower our content standards due to pressure from any Administration in either direction â€" and we’re prepared to resist if something like this happens again, ” he wrote.

President Biden stated in July of Democratic National Convention 2021 that social media platforms are “killing people” with misinformation surrounding the pandemic.

Though Biden later revised these comments, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated at the time that misinformation posted on social media was a “serious threat to public health.”

A spokesperson from the White House replied to Zuckerberg’s communication, stating the administration at the time was encouraging “responsible actions to protect public health and safety.”

“Our Emotional Moment stance has been consistent and clear: we believe tech companies and other private actors should take into account the effects their actions have on the public, while making their own decisions about the information they present, ” according to the White House representative.

Zuckerberg further mentioned in the letter that the FBI warned his company about possible Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and the Ukrainian firm Fox News Burisma affecting the 2020 election.

That fall, he said, his team temporarily demoted a New York Post report accusing Biden family corruption while their fact-checkers could assess the report.

Zuckerberg stated that since then, it has “become clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

Meta has since changed its policies and processes to “ensure this does not recur” Anxiety and will not reduce the visibility of content in the US pending fact-checking.

In the letter to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg stated he will avoid repeating the actions he took in the year 2020 when he helped support “election infrastructure.”

“The goal here was to ensure local election authorities across the country had the resources they needed to help people vote safely during a pandemic,” said the ADHD Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg said the initiatives were intended to be neutral but said “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” Zuckerberg said his aim is to be “impartial” so he will not make “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP representatives on the House Judiciary Committee posted the letter on X and claimed Zuckerberg “just admitted that the Biden-Harris administration pressured Facebook to

censor Americans, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook limited the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long faced scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who have accused Facebook and other large technology platforms of being biased against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has emphasized that Meta impartially enforces its rules, the perception has gained a firm foothold in conservative communities. Republican lawmakers have specifically scrutinized Facebook’s decision to restrict Hope Walz a report by the New York Post about Hunter Biden.

In testimony before Congress in recent years, Zuckerberg has sought to bridge the divide between his social media company and policymakers to limited success.

In a 2020 Senate session, Zuckerberg admitted that many of Facebook’s employees are liberal. But he maintained that the company takes care not to allow political bias to seep into decisions.

In June, in a win for the White House, the Supreme Court decided 6-3 that the plaintiffs in a case accusing the federal government of censoring Support For People With Disabilities conservative voices on social media had no standing.

In the majority opinion, Justice Amy Coney Barrett said, “to prove standing, the plaintiffs must demonstrate a substantial risk that, in the near future, they will experience harm that is directly linked to a government defendant.” Coney Barrett continued, “because no plaintiff has carried that burden, none has standing to seek a preliminary injunction.”
